The Exerpeutic 1000 High Capacity Magnetic Recumbent Bike with Pulse is much like the Exerpeutic 900XL model. They’re both basic, no bells or whistles but quite useful indoor recumbent exercise bikes.
The main difference is the Exerpeutic 1000 comes with a wider seat and back rest.
Many people who use exercise bicycles do so as part of a program to lose weight. Consequently, many of these owners start out somewhat heavy — and, therefore, large.
Everybody is different. Some people are larger. And some people prefer larger or small seats or back rests no matter what the size of their own rears.
The Exerpeutic 1000 Magnetic Bike is slightly more expensive than the 900XL.
If your main concern is comfort, go with the larger seat and back rest.
If it’s price, go with the 900XL.
How Quiet is This Bike’s Operation?
The pedals you turn by pedaling with your feet connect to the flywheel with a V belt drive, the standard design for belt power transmission.
The V shape fits into a groove in the pulley so, unlike flat belts, it can’t slip off. The belt’s made of tough rubber. It’s kept at a high level of tension, which gives you a smooth ride.
In general, belts need less maintenance than chain link drives. However, eventually they become stretched and need to be replaced.
However, since the belt is just hard rubber going around in perfect fit with the pedals and the flywheel, it’s very quiet.
The manufacturer says it comes with a “Smooth torque” cranking system. Torque is the rotational force. Your feet making the flywheel spin by pedaling. Therefore, they have designed the equipment to keep it running as smoothly as possible.
They’ve also made sure the flywheel is precision balanced. That is, the same weight all around, so it rotates smoothly.
The 8 resistance levels are created by magnetic tension.
Therefore, there’s no friction applied to the flywheel. Therefore, that makes no sound at all.
The upshot is, on review, the Exerpeutic 1000 Magnetic Recumbent Bike is very quiet.
You won’t disturb people living below or next to you. Or even your roommate or family member studying in the same room. You can watch TV, read, talk on the phone, text or play video games.
How Do You Change the Resistance Level?
There are 8 levels of resistance created by magnetic tension. They range from Next to Nothing to Quite Challenging Unless Your Thighs are Steel Bands.
You change them using a manual knob like the channel changer of an old-fashioned TV set.
Who is the Exerpeutic 1000 Magnetic Recumbent Bike for?
Basically, it’s for people who want to get a workout without needing a lot of electronic frills.
The 8 levels of resistance are enough for almost everybody, but not as fine-tined as the twenty or more other, more expensive models have.
There are no preset workouts.
It won’t send your workout numbers to a mobile app or store it on a website.
There’s no place to set a tablet so you can watch a movie (although you can on your own TV in the same room) or a holder for a water bottle.
Basically, it appeals to people who want to keep things simple. Just sit down, set it to your desired resistance level and then pedal until you quit.
You get the full benefit of the physical activity, including burning of calories and forcing your heart to work harder.
And it’s gentle on your joints, even less stressful than walking.
And it easily fits into your lifestyle. It eliminates all your excuses for not exercising.
Therefore, if you’re a body hacker or serious cyclist who wants to track ever heartbeat and every meter, or you want the bicycle manufacturer to suggest workouts for you, you need to pay for more complicated electronic functions.
However, this bike could work for serious athletes who can just use a watch to time their High Intensity Interval Training workouts.
And it’s being used by people to lose weight, recuperate from back, hip or knee surgery and from strokes.
And by many people who just don’t want to suffer from the physical degredation that occurs from sitting down too much.
Physically — the manufacturer says it’s for people who weigh up to 300 pounds.
Also, again according to the manufacturer, it’s for people from 5′ 3″ to 6′ 3″.
However, according to my review of the customer research actual customers have different results.
That is, people who weigh over 300 pounds use it to good effect. That seems fair because the people who weigh the most need the gentle exercise the most.
However, at some point people simply cannot physically fit on the seat or between the handle bars. The handle bars are 19.75″ apart. The seat is 16″ wide.
It comes with extended leg stabilizers, but if you weigh much over 300 pounds understand you may be stressing the frame and it may not last as long. And be careful getting on and off.
Likewise, people of different heights may fit on it. It depends on your inseam as well as your height. One man who is 6′ 3″ with a 34″ inseam does not even need the tallest setting.
And people under 5′ 3″ also use it. Though the shortest I’ve found is just 5′. If you’re just a little shorter, try sitting with a thick pillow behind your lower back.
Because of the magnetic tension, do not use this model if you have a pacemaker or defibrillator.
The Physical Design Reviewed
This stationary bicycle consists of a front unit with the pedals and the enclosed flywheel and a rear unit consisting of the seat and backrest.
It does not fold up.
They are joined by a bolt that rests on the ground. This “Step Through” design makes it easy for people to safely sit down and stand up.
The front does have bars you can hold on to as well.
Both sections have extended crossbars on floor to provide for greater stability.
The front section has transportation wheels, so it’s easy to move. Just pick up the rear, which is very light because it’s just the seat, and roll the bike where you want to place it.
Make sure you place it on a flat floor, though the extended stabilizers will help level it.
Put down some kind of mat or rug to protect your floor’s surface.
The front section does have an LCD display screen. It displays the:
* Distance you’ve pedaled in that session
* Total mileage for the bicycle
* Time elapsed
* Estimated calories you’ve burned
* Current speed
* Your heart rate (if you’re holding on to the bars of the monitor with both hands)
It has two bars, one on each side of your seat. If you hold on to them, the Hand Pulse Monitor tracks your heart rate.
The LCD Display monitor requires two AA batteries.
It is large and comfortable. It’s 16″ wide. You set it in ten different positions over a length of 12 inches.
It’s 19″ inches from the floor.
Changing the seat’s position does require you to adjust three different screws.
And you cannot do so while sitting on the seat. You have to get off.
Therefore, you may have to experiment a little before you find the exact setting that best suits you.
And if someone else of a different height will also use the bike, you’ll have to re-set it every time you change users.
So that is sort of a hassle.
They come with straps so your feet won’t slip off. However, people who feet size 12 have complained the straps aren’t large enough.
This bike is 54″ long.
And 34″ high
It weighs 63 lbs.
Good, basic bicycle for people who just need to exercise more.
It has a larger seat and backrest.
You don’t pay for any bells and whistles you don’t need or want.
It’s very quiet.
You don’t get any bells or whistles. If you want preset workouts, a tray to hold your iPod or to store your workout in a mobile app or a website, this model is not for you.
The seat is inconvenient to adjust its position. You have to get off the bike and manually change three different screws.
Some complain that the seat becomes loose over time. Perhaps that’s from people always changing the position.
This is not an issue if only one person will use the bike, but will be inconvenient for households of more than one cyclist.
It runs under $250. It’s not nearly as expensive as the models with much more complicated computerized equipment. But it costs slightly more than the Exerpeutic 900XL.
Who It’s Best For
People who just want to sit and pedal without trying to make it more complicated than it has to be.
That is, you’re not training for the Olympics.
But you’re elderly, disabled, overweight, recovering from surgery or just seeking to increase your physical activity to maintain your cardiovascular condition.
You’ve heard that “sitting is as bad as smoking.”
Also, using an indoor stationary bicycle such as this one is good for everybody.
That’s because going to the gym does NOT make up for sitting down the rest of the day.
Also, even if you work out regularly by running or cycling, sometimes that’s difficult.
It’s too dark outside. Or cold. Or snowing.
This cycle always most people to increase their level of physical activity while maintaining their current lifestyles. That’s because they can pedal while watching TV, reading and so on.
Who This Exerpeutic 1000 High Capacity Magnetic Recumbent Bike is Not Best For
If you’re compulsive about tracking all your activity, your heart rate during workouts and other such information then this bike is not sophisticated enough for you.
Or you need preset workouts. Or a cup to hold a water bottle.
If you’re a dedicated cyclist or triathlon athlete in training but forced indoors by bad weather, you’ll probably want an upright stationary exercise bicycle anyway.
The Exerpeutic 1000 High Capacity Magnetic Recumbent bike is a good, low-priced basic indoor stationary exercise bicycle.
It’s great for people of all athletic levels who need to watch their budgets or who simply don’t want to pay for complicated options they don’t care about.
